Uneducated IT Managers and How to Deal
Slashdot has a discussion going about dealing with uneducated IT managers. Here’s how it started:
Is it ignorant to believe an IT manager should be a knowledgeable in technology as a whole? A person you respect and frequently learn from? It creates an extremely frustrating work environment, and our team doesn’t know how to approach the problem. It’s becoming too much to simply “put up with it.”

Yeah, that was pretty hilarious. My take would be a manager doesn’t have to be that technical but he should have a general grasp on technology. He doesn’t need to know how to program a router or write code for a database but he should know what they do. They are there to manage people and not be technical role models. I could care less if my manager was technical or not. If he doesn’t micromanage me and gives me the tools and environment to do my job that’s all I need. K, rant over….

Though sometimes it’s good to have someone that can give you a push in the right technical direction. When you’re stuck, it’s a big help to have someone who understands the issues and can give alternatives.
