Only Asian on Top Chef
Another entertaining episode of Top Chef played on Wednesday night. Last week, snack king Miguel was booted off the show for being Top Sous Chef and not Top Chef. In this week’s challenge, Wedding Bell Blues, the Chefs are asked to plan and cater a wedding for a gay couple. But the chefs don’t know that the ceremony is in 16 hours.
Scott and Scott, the engaged couple, wanted an Asian fusion theme for their meal at which point Lee Anne says the line of the episode, “As you can see, I’m the only Asian in the room.” Needless to say, Scott and Scott selected her menu for the ceremony. That’s when the Chefs were unfairly told that the wedding was in 16 hours.
I say unfair since the judges placed the Chefs in an unwinnable situation. “Make their dreams come true,” “most important day of their lives,” “translate those dreams into edible reality,” says the judges. So the Chefs go all out with fanatastic ideas. Then get told they only have 16 hours until the ceremony then get critized for picking such a difficult menu to prepare. I think things would have been different if the Chefs knew they only had 16 hours to prepare. Menus and ideas would have been scaled back to meet realitic timeframes.
In the end, it was sommelier Stephen who didn’t pull his weight in the kitchen that had to pack up his knives and go.
