Pearl Jam’s Cover of Hawaii 78
What a coincidence of events. Over on Beagles are people too, there’s a post about songs that we like but were too embarrassed to admit it that lists Lumidee’s “She’s Like the Wind” remake. Then on Baby Dog Days, Angry Asian Girl comments about Catherine Toth’s Daily Dish blog at the Advertiser. On the Daily Dish, Cat’s latest post talks about the Best & Worst Cover Songs Ever.
In this post, there’s a mention of Pearl Jam covering Israel Kamakawiwoole’s powerful “Hawaii ’78” song. I’ve heard this on the radio and always wondered where this rendition came from. A quick Google search found this Star Bulletin article talking about a recent Pearl Jam concert when they played their cover of Hawaii 78.
Even better, there’s a video on YouTube that captures this moment. Take a listen…
Even though Eddie Vedder’s vocals can’t match the power and serenity of Brother Iz, singing this song is a true sentiment to Iz and the people of Hawaii.

Sorry, for some reason I had no comments allowed on that post. Don’t know what happened. I turned it back on just for you. 😉

When I blogged the U2 and Pearl Jam concert at Aloha Stadium, I linked to a fan blog that posted a chicken-skin MP3 recording of Pearl Jam’s performance at the Waimea benefit. I was playing it nonstop for days.

Ryan, thanks. Looks like I missed out. The sources you blogged about came up empty, even the Pearl Jam site.
