My Shuffle No Like Shuffle
My faltering first generation iPod Shuffle is acting up again. For awhile, it was working fine, but while out for a run yesterday, it went back to playing only a few songs over and over.
I always use my Shuffle in shuffle mode so by chance, I tried the “other” mode where the music plays in sequence. Hey, all the songs play in this mode! Good enough for me and sure beats hearing the same songs over and over.

Man, my new nano is already giving me problems! Once, it just turned off all by itself and today, as I was on the treadmill, I could FF to the next songs, but it wouldn’t play. So I turned it off and then on again, but the the screen froze!
I was dreading another trip to the Apple store again, but went online and was able to reset it with the help of the FAQ. But still, this is a brand new machine! Should it be doing this? I’m not really happy about that….

Sorry to hear your experience with Apple products and service is sucking big time! I’ve noticed quite a few Windows user having initial problems with freezes when getting new iPods. Not sure what the heck. A Windows problem, an iPod problem, a fake problem so users think Windows sucks, or Apple stuff sucks??? Either way, quite a few people that have Windows boxes have had to reset their iPods right after getting them.
I don’t recall having early problems with my iPods on my Macs. I have on occasion reset my iPod due to freezes, but I’ve only done that like 3 times for my big iPod.
Apple does have an unofficial 3 strike lemon policy but it takes going through the hassle of going through tech support.

I’ve had serious problems with my first gen shuffle as well, and I sorta figured out what was going on. I ran the shuffle update utility (like yourself) which would reformat my shuffle everytime.
I found that anytime I wrote a song from my iTunes that was no longer linked in my library (because I had accidentally deleted or moved it), once the shuffle hit this song – it would go bonkers. I figured it had something to do with trying to update missing files.

Ryan, thanks. All my songs on my Shuffle are available so that shouldn’t be a problem for me.
I think it’s just acting finicky before it eventually bites the dust and gives me an excuse to get a Nano.
Can’t complain too much since it was “free.”
