“We Have to Go Back!”
What a great season finale of Lost! Producers and writers, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, definitely had their mojo in high gear.
The flash forward sequences were something I didn’t see coming, but now makes more sense with the end of the series scheduled for 2010. Knowing the Lost survivors get off the island adds a whole new aspect to the show that will take time to tell.
All this time I assumed that getting off the island was the whole story of Lost. Once that happened then the series would be over. Now I know otherwise. With the impending rescue, I see that the island is the story of Lost.
What is so special about the island and why is it so special? Why do some island inhabitants show unique “powers” that no one else can replicate. For example, eye-patched Mikhail seems to survive just about any death. Other inhabitants stay dead. And what’s with the never aging Richard?
Locke escaped death but his ability to walk seems tied to his self confidence. While in doubt in the pit, Locke was back to his paralyzed state until Walt gave him a purpose telling him he still had work to do. Is that Walt or is the island personifying Walt?
Will everyone be rescued or will some choose to stay on the island? Rose and Bernard may stay since the island cured Rose’s cancer. I think Locke would stay. Is everyone supposed to stay and take on the responsibility of protecting the island like the Others have been doing?
Is Ben really a good guy?
And of course, what makes Jack tell Kate, “We have to go back!”
We’ll have to wait until SuperBowl XLII in February 2008 to find out.
