Forget Olympic Gold, Kristi Wins the DWTS Mirrorball
Representing your country in the international Olympics and bringing home a gold medal is a great honor, but winning the coveted Mirrorball trophy of Dancing with the Stars is a glittery blast as Kristi Yamaguchi found out taking the championship. Both Kristi and other Finalist, Jason Taylor, received perfect scores for their last dances, so the vote of the fans rightfully determined the winner of Season 6.
I was a little surprised that Cristian de la Fuente didn’t pull an upset over Jason Taylor. With his injury, Cristian was in the media and was actually performing better than before. I guess pitting a one arm handicap actor against a gold medalist with impeccable precision would have been too lopsided a Finals.
A two-hour finale was a little tough to endure wanting only to see like 30 minutes of worthwhile content. Even sound bites and video clips were repeated during this marathon. Good thing Adam Carolla kept it fresh with his explanation why terrorists hate America.
Interestingly enough, the last four DWTS champions have a background in competition and sports – Emmitt Smith, Apolo Anton Ohno, Helio Castroneves, and now Kristi Yamaguchi. I guess all those years of competing hone your mental toughness even for the dance floor.
So after a long drought, a woman has won the championship of Dancing with the Stars, and Kristi had an impressive run. She had the highest average score, 28.3, of DWTS celebrities alltime. She also had the most 10 scores and placed first eight times with six consecutive weeks at the top of the leaderboard. Kristi’s lowest score this year? 26 in Weeks 7 (Viennese Waltz) and 8 (samba). She never received an individual score of less than 8 and had a perfect run through the finals with 90 out of 90.
Proudly hold up that Mirrorball trophy Kristi!
And if you missed it, here’s the last few minutes of the Finals as Kristi is announced the winner.
