Lion Keeps My Mess
Boo, now I have to start tidying up my Mac whenever I shut down for the day. Taking a cue from the iPhone and iPad iOS, Lion now features Resume. Whenever you fire up an app, it will return to its last state with files open, windows placed, etc. When I power on my Mac, it’ll resume from the previous shutdown condition, starting up apps that were running, opening files, and moving windows around. So if I had a mess of stuff while shutting down, that mess persists after a restart.
I don’t know if I like this or not. At the end of the day, I’ve had enough. I want to shutdown and have all my apps quit automatically then start the next day with a clean desktop. With Lion’s Resume, my new day already feels like the burden of yesterday. There is that shutdown option to reopen windows when logging back in. I think I’ll uncheck that box to help clean up my mess.

Interesting. As I read the first paragraph of your post I was like, “there’s no option to turn off resume or something like that?” But then you answered that afterward.
I can understand why that would be helpful (and also your point of view as well). As for myself, I actually close down all my apps and save everything before I shut down (a habit from high school computing).
Maybe I should live dangerously and just leave everything open when I shut down?

Try it. Â It’s kinda cool to see all your stuff restored in front of you. Â But then again, you might be instantly reminded of how much work you still have to do. 😉

Hehe.
I still have to upgrade to Lion though. Just haven’t found the time to do it yet.

Takes about 45 minutes to download and another 30 minutes to actually install. Â My install went smoothly but Lion made some changes that affect me at work (no Samba for Windows file share for example).

Some days I prefer my mess to greet me, most days not. 🙂

Me too. Â I have mixed feelings about this Lion feature. Â Can’t decide if I like it or not. Â Probably like on my home computer but dislike on my work computer.
