Suggestions for Batman Graphic Novels?
After watching The Dark Knight Rises at the excellent #DKBK tweetup, I’m intrigued and want to catch up with the Dark Knight storyline(s). As a kid, I used to collect some Batman and Detective Comics, but I stopped well before the introduction of nemesis Bane.
I searched Amazon for Batman graphic novels, not knowing there were a bunch. Do you have any recommendations for which ones to read (or avoid). Any particular order I should read them in?
I also found this list of best Batman graphic novels of all time. The top four looks like a good place to start.
- Batman: The Killing Joke
- Batman: Year One
- Batman: The Long Halloween
- Batman: The Dark Knight Returns

From @electricbamboo on Twitter: Dark Knight Returns is essential. Killing Joke too. I liked Batman & Robin by Grant Morrison, and hope to read Batman Inc. soon.

From @honhiguy on Twitter: I absolutely love The Killing Joke by Alan Moore. I still own 2 mint copies of it and have read it at least a dozen times. Great story with The Joker and amazing art by Brian Bolland. Of course, Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight is a must read for any Batman fan as well. I didn’t realize that it had been renamed The Dark Knight Returns.

From @yoda808 on Twitter: Here are a few suggestions that would totally complement watching The Dark Knight Rises:
Knightfall–I’m almost positive this is where Nolan got the storyline for Bane.
Cataclysm & No Man’s Land–A storyline in the comics that looks at Gotham City being cordoned off from the rest of the country.
Finally, here’s a post from Cinema Blend addressing this very topic: http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Dark-Knight-Rises-Pique-Your-Interest-8-Ways-Start-Reading-Batman-Comics-31988.html

From Stewart on FB: Wow, I’m glad theres other fans of The Killing Joke! One of my favorite graphic novels too! I wouldn’t mind seeing a good crossover movie, batman/predator or batman/punisher, the darker the better. 🙂

Thanks, though i’m getting mixed responses for Long Halloween. But if controversial then it must be memorable 😉
