Mad Props (and Some Not)
The home front is more or less done, and things are starting to settle down (as best as can be with a new addition that is). Overall, things went great, and there’s a few folks who deserve some mad props… and some who don’t.
First off, if you’re looking for any type of construction work, you won’t go wrong with WKC Construction. Mr. “G” along with business partner, Jensen Wong, did an excellent job. We told them our short timeline for project completion, and they more or less made it (we had add-on work that they were still doing after our target date).
The crew from WKC flat out busted their butts! Six days a week from 8 to 5. I called them the Chinese Oceans 11. Even though there were 8 guys(!!!) working every day, the sight of the crew coming to work in the morning was impressive. There were times I thought the INS was going to shutdown the operation, but the language barrier wasn’t too bad after all.
The guys do quality work, pay attention to detail, and will continue to work until you’re satisfied. While looking at our interior ceiling from a side angle, I could see lines and asked about it. Next thing I know, there’s a few guys redoing the entire ceiling! It took another day or so to redo the compound, smooth it out, and repaint, but it looks much better! Even other guys who came by to do minor work were impressed by the quality and safety consciousness of the WKC workers.
And talk about versatile, they did the entire home extension and replaced our windblown fence and also did a keystone wall in our backyard. An overall great experience!

As the summer months get hotter and hotter, the need to be cool gets greater. Enter SMAC Hawaii (Sheet Metal and Air Conditioner). Mel Jr. and Mike do quality work installing Mitsubishi split AC systems. Though costs have gone up over the years, whenever I’ve had problems with any of our existing AC units, someone would come by for a free checkup.
Only playing a small role, Jesse from Oceanic Cable was a cool dude checking out our new cable lines. A young styling guy wearing Adidas shell shoes, he moved our Road Runner cable modem and re-terminated the cable jacks with new, high quality connectors.
A mixed review goes to Hawaiian Telcom. Yeah, they’ve had serious customer and billing issues ever since they went their own way, and I guess they’re still working on it. I called to see what was needed to hookup the new phone jacks to our existing phone setup. The customer service rep didn’t understand what I wanted and insisted I needed a second phone number for the house extension. After some discussion, she said she’d have to check on what I was asking for and would get back to me. She (or anyone from Hawaiian Telcom) never did. But… one day, there was a Hawaiian Telcom field worker doing routine maintenance in the street. I asked him what I needed to do to hookup the newly installed lines. He told me that I could do it myself and save the $50 service installation fee. He told me which wire pairs to look for and what to do. Sure enough, he was right, and now we got dial tone on our new phone outlets.
The only part of the home extension that didn’t go well was the carpeting. Sorry Ming’s Flooring, but I’m disappointed. Yes, we asked for standard carpet padding which turned out to be rebond. But after complaining about the bumps and not being a satisfied customer, you charged us for installing a different type of padding. And to top it off, I know one of the carpet installers was wearing my slippers in the house while redoing the carpet. Can’t you guys at least get your own footwear for what you’re charging?!

You bringing the PVC and sprinklerheads? I got shovels and picks and Mountain Dew in the fridge.
We might be having a pulp party after all. Not sure though… Sorry no Muffin allowed and maybe if there was some hula dancing…
