More Windows on Mac Ruminations
The rumblings of running Windows on a Mac continues on I, Cringley’s latest column. Actually, this column extends the idea of dual booting between OS X and XP or even virtualization by talking about running Windows apps directly in OS X.
Seems like Apple has a legal right to Windows APIs used in XP with that Microsoft investment in Apple in 1997. That five-year investment created a cross exchange of ideas and patents for both companies. When that legal agreement ended in 2002, Windows XP had already shipped so Apple is legally entitled to XP technologies, including the key APIs. By implementing the APIs in the next version of OS X running on Intel chips, users could, in theory, run native Windows apps in OS X without emulation, virtualization, or dual booting. Zowie!
