Catching Up with Nike+iPod
I’m still catching up with the whole Nike+iPod partnership with all the news articles coming out. So far everything I’ve seen talks about an iPod Nano. I wonder if I can use my regular iPod instead since I don’t have a Nano. Looks like the wireless receiver in the Nike+iPod Sport Kit connects to the iPod via the standard Dock connector so maybe a regular iPod would work. But then I’d have to run or work out with the iPod while its hard drive spins – not good.
Seems like the Nike+ shoes simply have a pocket for the sensor and isn’t very different from other running shoes. At the get go, Nike offers seven shoes with the built-in pocket for the sensor. The Nike Air Zoom Moire is the black and red running shoe iconified with the Nike+iPod system. More PlusReady shoes will be available.
The sensor is removable so you can use it in other shoes, but finding a comfortable spot for the sensor might be tough. Also, since it is a wireless transmitter, power is provided by a battery with 1000 hours of life. I guess when the battery dies, you need to buy a new pair of sensors. But it’s been said that the sensor battery will outlast the shoe. Price should be less than $30 a pair since the entire Sport Kit with the iPod-wireless receiver costs $30.
At the announcement event of the partnership, Steve Jobs was present wearing a pair of Moires instead of his tried and true grey New Balances.
Lastly, when you need a boost of motivational musical energy during your run, you can activate your “Power Song.” By pushing the center button, your pre-selected Power Song will play to get you through that rough spot. Seems like you can have only one song designated as your Power Song. You don’t have a Power Playlist. What would your Power Song be? Off the top of my head, I’ll go with Tupac’s distinctive California Love.

You will indeed have to purchase a new Sport Kit when the battery runs, however as you pointed out the battery will last longer than a pair of shoes. In fact, it looks like it will last through the life of about five pairs of running shoes. Not bad if you ask me. I posted an article about the battery life on my iPod Sport Kit blog here:
