Thinking Through [re]think Hawaii

Still thinking through the events of Day 3 of [re]think Hawaii, but it seems my thoughts are centering around these three ideas:

  • My learning at [re]think Hawaii. Some of my notes from the event.
  • My observations at [re]think Hawaii. Were the guys more well coiffed than the ladies at the conference?
  • My confusion at [re]think Hawaii. Where was the Hawaii in [re]think Hawaii?

Busy Week Ahead

Got a busy but fun week ahead. What’s in store?

  • AFCEA TechNet Expo. Going to check out this annual even to see what’s up and collect some free goodies.
  • [re]think:Hawaii. Headed to Waikiki for Day 3 featuring the Social Media Business Summit.
  • TEDxHonolulu. On Thursday, the first localized TEDx event for Hawaii will be at the Hawaii Convention Center. Since I got invited, I gotta go!

Hawaii News Now Refreshes Its Blogs

KGMB9 did wonders with its blogs and building trust with them, and I’m glad to see this facet transition over to the new mega KGMB-KHNL-KFVE merger known as Hawaii News Now.

The new news station has refreshed its blogroll, bringing in some new bloggers. Minna Sugimoto goes Behind the Yellow Tape, videojournalist Duane Shimogawa says Par-Duane Me!, Mari-Ela David shares her thoughts on Slippah Talk, and Stephanie Lum writes on Steph On It!

And don’t worry, the blogging “veterans” are still at it. Ben Gutierrez, Howard Dicus, Malika Dudley, Oscar Valenzuela, Dan Cooke, and blogging queen Tannya Joaquin continue to post (some more frequently than others). What happened to the tech-focused blog run by Jared? If this blog makes a comeback, how about the name of “Plain Tech” as in plainly explaining the behind-the-scenes technology and also a play on words of “plain text” (versus rich text in the geeky world).

Adding to My Book List: Harnessing the Groundswell

Ooh, the next “chapter” of the Groundswell will be coming out in 2010, and I’m adding “Harnessing the Groundswell: Drive Your Business With Empowered Employees and Customers” to my book list. Here’s their short description:

Use Facebook and Twitter to Become Rich

Not in some kind of Internet marketing strategy, but as an indirect means of upping your status. You see, in the past, it was users of Google search and Gmail who were characterized as wealthy and rich (and young).

Now, there’s been a shift to Facebook and Twitter. A recent study shows that FB-ers and Tweeters have more money and tend to live in urban areas. So the obvious correlation is that if you too want to have more money, you have to ditch MySpace and start using Facebook and also tweeti like there’s no tomorrow.

Apple and the Big Three of Social Media Marketing

Quick, what are your guesses of the top three social media sites used by corporations for marketing purposes? Is is MySpace? How about Facebook? Is YouTube used?

My limited, unofficial research brought me across these sites:

From these various sites, the most popular that are surfacing are Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. This trio is becoming the big three of social media marketing used by companies to engage and interact with their customers.

But is there room for one more?  The inclusion of iTunes (and the App Store) in the above samples is very interesting and could hint at Apple’s next move.  No, I’m not suggesting that Apple enter the social media space to challenge the current contenders.  That’s not Apple’s way.  Historically, Apple only enters the fray when the company feels it can dominate the space or effectively change the game.

This is where Apple could make a definite impact, providing users with the preeminent means of engaging with social media.  No, Apple should not make their own version of Facebook (sorry MobileMe), but instead get people connected to Facebook.  As in mobile or desktop access to Facebook using an iPhone, iPod, or a Mac, as in publishing pictures to Facebook using iPhoto, as in sharing musical tastes with Facebook using iTunes, as in sharing movies on Facebook using iMovie, as in feeding other content to Facebook via integration with an iPhone app.  Same with YouTube, iMovie ’08 included exporting to YouTube, the recent iPhone 3GS supports mobile movie uploads to YouTube, and now Snow Leopard’s QuickTime X can export to YouTube straight from the OS.  You see a trend here?

By approaching the social media space not as a service, but as a connector to these services, Apple can change the game and really ingrain itself in the social media landscape.  That is Apple’s way.

Wanted: Customized URL Shortener

My hunt for a customized URL shortener still goes on. I do use bit.ly, su.pr, and to an extent, ginx.com, but I’d like something more customizable that supports my own domain name. Su.pr does support URL shortening with your current domain name (pulpconnection.net), but I want to use a different domain for shortening (ie pulp.ly).

So far, I haven’t been able to find a plugin or service that does this. Su.pr is close but not close enough. The hunt goes on…

Ready to (Re)Think Hawaii?

In November, an international group of entrepreneurs and investors will convene in Hawaii in order to rethink tech, business, and sustainability. Dubbed (RE)THINK HAWAII, this cross section of skills and interests will feature “panels, lunches, excursions, dinners, cocktails and aloha style exchange of ideas and relationship building in Hawaii.”

And yes, while an international gathering, the event organizers include Hawaii’s very own Neenz, Melanie, Bruce, and Yaling. Read about all the organizers involved.

Attendance to this event is limited to 200 participants, and you must be invited to attend. If you’re interested and can contribute to this nexus, you can request an invitation.

The Id, Ego, and Super-ego of Social Media

One of the things I remember from Psych 7 class in college is the model of the id, ego, and super-ego. First a lesson from Wikipedia, the id is described as:

amoral and egocentric, ruled by the pleasure–pain principle; it is without a sense of time, completely illogical, primarily sexual, infantile in its emotional development, and will not take “no” for an answer. It is regarded as the reservoir of the libido or “instinctive drive to create”.

The ego is the mediator between the id and super-ego and:

separates what is real. It helps us to organise our thoughts and make sense of them and the world around us.

Lastly, the super-ego:

strives to act in a socially appropriate manner, whereas the id just wants instant self-gratification. The Super-ego controls our sense of right and wrong and guilt. It helps us fit into society by getting us to act in socially acceptable ways

What I recognize is this id, ego, and super-ego construct in relation to my personal social media outlets. I definitely have to say that my social media id is Pulpconnection.net. Everything about the id and its pleasure principle is probably contained within this blog. I freely talk about anything on this blog and have been known to “spit the truth.”

My social media ego equivalent is probably Twitter. The short bursts of tweets about news and conversations do help make sense of the virtual and physical world around me. And in Twitter, what I tweet are expressions of “I myself,” the pure definition of ego.

Lastly, my super-ego representation has to be Facebook. The super-ego acts as the conscious, just as Facebook does for me, probably because real names are used. Although my tweets and blog posts are fed into Facebook, I selectively add other components to my Facebook profile balancing the urges of my id and the realities of my ego.

So there you have it, my id, ego, and super-ego of social media. What are yours?
